Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some of our most frequently asked questions about our solar energy solutions and electric vehicle charging stations.

Please contact us with any additional questions you may have about our solar energy solutions and electric vehicle charging stations -a member of our team will be happy to address any questions and or get you started on your transition to a greener you.

What are the different types of EV Charger stations?

There are three basic types of charging stations: direct current fast charge (or DCFC) stations, wall outlets, and specialized high-voltage stations.A level 1 charging station is a wall outlet. You can find these in most residences and most businesses. They’re reliable and easily accessible but offer a low current. At level 2, there’s your high-voltage stations. They have higher amounts of energy than level 1, and can support charging electric vehicles even faster. They may require special connectors and cables to charge your electric vehicle.

Is financing available or do I have to pay upfront?

We are please to provide you with financing solutions to meet your unique needs. No matter your situation, we will work with you to get you started on your solar journey.

What type of charging station do I need?

Residential home charging stations are a little different from the charging stations you might find at a commercial charger. Home charging stations are gaining popularity the same way that EV purchases are increasing year-by-year. But the type of charging solution you may need can differ depending on your needs.Usually, charging stations come in two levels. Level 1 charging and level 2 charging. Level 1 charging stations include the charger that comes with your vehicle. You can plug the charger into one end of any typical 120V outlet and plug the other into the car. This charges 200km in about 20 hours.A level 2 charger is sold separately, and requires a more complicated setup (but for better payoff.) It can be plugged into a 240V outlet and may charge a vehicle 3-7x faster, depending on the electric vehicle.

What is included on an EV charger station installation?

Most EV charger installations come with a wall mount with a cable rest, and an SAE j17772 connector, which is standardized for well over 10,000 charging cycles and works with North American-sold plug-in vehicles.Contact CMI Solar for additional information regarding what EV charger installations come equipped with, and the best way to an EV charger installation most fit to your electrical needs.

Do I need a permit to install and EV charger?

Although not all electrical work requires the acquisition of a permit, installing an at-home EV charger means you will need to acquire a permit from your local jurisdiction or city. Luckily, CMI does this work on your behalf so you don’t have to.Note that your EV charger may become the highest energy consumer in your residence, likely after your HVAC system. Having a permit ensures you can keep your household safe.Always contact a certified electrician or EV charging expert, like CMI Solar, before making a purchase to see what works best with your current electrical setup.
